Interview

Guest – Jeffrey Snover

Notes

  • JEA premises
    • reduce the # of admin privs users
    • credentials persist and can be used to spider
    • limit actions
  • New toolkit based on powershell remoting
  • JEA endpoint = powershell configuration
    • provisions user w/set of toolkits (and only those)
    • runs as an account with local admin privs
    • JEA endpoint account has only local admin privs
  • “security that isn’t deployed, isn’t security”
  • How can we take advanced features and reduce to a simple set of features to deploy
  • Implemented as DSC
  • PowerShell v5 is required
    • Why: any time that WinRM changes are made, WinRM service must be restarted, and v4 has a bug in WinRM
  • Very similar to sudo from *nix, but more fine-grained, e.g. limit which process can be stopped by stop-process
  • Build CSV as input to a toolkit spec
    • module
    • command(s)
    • parameters
  • Logging is sent to ETW/PowerShell, and is broken down by module
  • Will ship as a set of toolkits
  • OMI runs on 41 Linux distros
  • “CTP next month” (meaning July?)
  • “yes, moving back towards developers and new .net features”

Chatroom Highlights:

[21:37:02] <sepeck> ## when is the next one [MVA]?

[21:38:07] <AlexTeachesTech> ## Will there be a DSC video series on MVA?

[21:45:05] <Ver_Anderson> ## What kind f pats do yu wear

[21:45:15] <psCookieMonster> just to get it out of the way – ## are classes coming to PS5, anything to share on the implementation?  Is a new PowerShell MVA on the way, what might be covered?  when will we get the PowerShell source code? : )  Maybe too early for the last one!

[21:45:18] <jcotton> ## is JEA based on PowerShell remoting?

[21:48:48] <BartekB> ## DSC for Linux is based on OMI. Can we expect easy OMI-to-DSC implementations? Like DSC for Cisco/ Arista/ Huawei?

[21:49:05] <MattHitchcock> ## Whats the approach for using JEA on Domain Controllers? I guess you’d be forced to use a Domain Account for RunAs

[21:51:17] <Zackbmiller> ## Can JEA be ran on all version of powershell?

[21:58:43] <BartekB> ## Why New-Object in JEA?

[21:59:26] <BartekB> halr9000: When I was watching Jeffrey presentation: he defined (exposed) new-object in endpoint.

[21:59:11] <PowerSchill> ## How do you handle the “chain of evidence” for the actions performed?

[22:03:18] <DonJ-MVP> ##### Payette “outed” classes in v5 on Twitter yesterday. Inquiring minds wanna confirmation.

[22:13:54] <psCookieMonster> ## will the slides from the Monad Manifesto update be made available?  Might be helpful for those that missed it

[22:18:24] <Darkoperator> wish OMI was packaged and available in most distros

[22:20:17] <randal_hicks> ## @jsnover With a project as huge as Powershell, how have you gone about managing it (other than check marks off the Monad Manifesto)?

[22:22:11] <randal_hicks> ## @jsnover How do you ‘unplug’ — to clear your head — before diving back into the work?

[22:42:26] <psCookieMonster> ## Jeffrey tweeted about DSC being fast tracked for the common engineering criteria a while back… in what sense?  standard for configuration management? Something else?

[22:44:23] <_____> “How I learned to stop clicking and love the shell” Jeffrey Snover

[22:47:50] <BartekB> ## why not xResources on GitHub, so that others can jump on it and help? We had some fixes to cResources and than almost the same on xResource.

<ScriptingWife> For anyone new to the chatroom, please place ## in front of questions for the guests so Jon and Jason can easily see them, THX

<randal_hicks> ## would you say Primal Script userbase were among the core early adopters of Powershell?

<MattHitchcock> ## Are SAPIEN concerned that if Microsoft were to start building more support into Visual Studio for PowerShell (and many of us believe they should), it might start removing a lot of the requirements people have for tools such as PowerShell Studio?

<MattHitchcock> ## Good point raised about WPF, was there a reason PowerShell Studio uses WinForms and not WPF as well? (or it might now and I may have missed that?)

<marc_carter> ## Is it too late in CY2014 for User Groups to get Dr. Rios scheduled for visit?  We had him scheduled earlier but bad weather didn’t allow it to happen.

<marc_carter> ## I’ve been reading up on and would like to set up an internal PowerShellGet repository.  Does sapien have products to help facilitate this or similar?

<Dave_Wyatt> ## Why are the price points of the Sapien tools so high?  PrimalScript and PowerShell Studio are nearly $400 apiece, more expensive than professional versions of Office, Windows and Visual Studio.  Is this targeted at corporate customers, or individuals?

<marc_carter> ## that concept would work well in our environmet.  only 2-3 scripters and 10-14 sys admins who don’t want to climb the learning curve.  ability to easily create apps for internal modules would be nice

<Jaykul> ## You broke the SQLite provider. Whine Whine.

<ScriptWarrior> ## Ask jim about Lucky Strike :)

<Stuwee> ## Can you go into more detail on PSGET ?

<Jaykul> ## Exceept it doesn’t handle dependencies (yet)

<Jaykul> ## And you can’t upload modules (yet)

<organicit> ## can we host our internal Module repo?

<Jaykul> ## QUESTION: Your most complicated module doesn’t have dependencies on other modules?

<Stuwee> ## How would we browse those modules today or do you need to be “invited”?

<Jaykul> ## DO YOU THINK we should enforce the use of the technet “technology tree” categories? I.e.: pick ONE category?

<Jaykul> ## Also, do you know there’s a preference variable to turn off autoloading, or make it autoload only when you explicitly specify Module\Verb-Noun

<Stuwee> ## What was that Philadelphia code camp statement?

Chatroom Highlights:

[22:43:30] <Jaykul> FWIW, my 2c: I think a “moderated” feed (where you just trust the core chocolatey team to review packages, instead of trusting all the authors) is the answer to “trust” — the idea being the core team says that yes, this module just downloads and installs “the real product” that it claims to.

<Jaykul> ## Have you heard rumors that chocolatey may move away from nuget?

<Jaykul> ## Are you involved in the chocolatey community at all?

<Jaykul> ## Are you (un)happy/neutral that Chocolatey has moved their lib/install folders to C:\ProgramData

<Jaykul> ## Are you (un)happy/neutral about the idea of expecting users to be “elevated” when running cinst?

<Jaykul> ## Does that mean boxstarter only works on machines that have access to the public internet?  <– I know it does, just want to bring it up

<Jaykul> ## What do you think about a “Moderated” feed like NuGet has for Microsoft

<Jaykul> ## Isn’t virus scanning the package mostly useless, since the package is just a script that downloads from the web? Would you guarantee that the install.ps1 can’t download anything without scanning it?

<Dave_Wyatt> ## Assuming that malicious code does make it into Chocolatey, what’s the response?  API keys revoked, packages taken offline, etc?  How fast would that happen?

<marc_carter> ##DSC noob here too…any suggestions or some practical examples to gain some familiarity?

<alexandair1> ## when can we expect to get resources written by other product teams?

<stevenmurawski> ##Will Test-TargetResource tell you what’s deviating if it fails?

<justpaul> ## will MS require the various teams to provide DSC resources (aka stop-ship, like they did with powerShell cmdlets)

<stevenmurawski> ##When will the DscResourceDesigner’s Test-DscResource handle more complex schema.mofs?

<stevenmurawski> ##What’s failing is the wave resources that you’ve released fail to validate with Test-DscResource
